The research behind the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics reveals students’ shallow understanding of place value concepts, evidenced by unreasonable results when adding, subtracting, multiplying or dividing. In order to avoid common errors, students need to develop a deep understanding of grouping by ten – the organizing principle of our base 10 place value system.
Understanding place value goes way beyond simply identifying which digit occupies which place value. Students need to understand how the base ten units of ones, tens, hundreds, etc., can be composed and decomposed to represent numbers in different ways.
This ability will help students when they begin to add and subtract with regrouping and continue to support their understanding as they move on to multiplication and division. Additionally, students will develop a deep understanding of the consistent structure of base 10 as they transition to working with decimal numbers.
The Place Value Cards app takes students beyond the typical rote exercises commonly found in many math textbooks. Students will be challenged to express whole and decimal numbers in new ways.
Place Value Cards features 5 Levels:
Level 1: Tens and Ones
Level 2: Hundreds, Tens, and Ones
Level 3: Thousands, Hundreds, Tens, and Ones
Level 4: Hundreds, Tens, Ones, and Tenths
Level 5: Tens, Ones, Tenths, and Hundredths
For example, on Level 2, the user might see the number 345. The user will be shown that 345 is composed of 3 hundreds, 4 tens, and 5 ones and will be asked to express 345 in 2 new ways. One possibility would be 2 hundreds, 13 tens, and 15 ones.
While working through the levels, students will discover the uniformity of the structure of the place value system. They will see that a given place value can always be decomposed to 10 of the place value to its right. This is true across all whole and decimal numbers.
The deep understanding developed by Place Value Cards will support students as they learn the standard procedures for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

In order to succeed in Algebra, students need to develop fluency working with positive and negative numbers. The Integer Cards app provides the practice that students need to help make adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing of integers an easy and automatic process.
Integer Cards encourages the development of mental math strategies for working with integers.
Each exercise in Integer Cards generates an integer and two actions to perform with the given number. By executing the rule, students will develop fluency working with positive and negative numbers.
Developed by a K-8 Math Specialist with the Common Core State Standards in mind, the Integer Cards app will improve your students’ computational fluency.
Features:
– Machine generated exercises for UNLIMITED practice, challenge, and fun!
– Practice with all four operations and positive/negative numbers
– GameCenter Achievement Badges and Leaderboards
– Positive verbal feedback
