A superficial reading of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics might seem to indicate that standard algorithms are not taught until Grade 4.

Dr. McCallum’s comments are a good reminder that standards are not curriculum, and that students must move along learning progressions and be exposed to concepts when they are ready.
